Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is the reduction of the labia majora or/and the labia minora. It is usually done for medical and aesthetic reasons. Large or thick labia minora can result in pain or discomfort while doing some sports or wearing tight clothing. Some women feel embarrassed about the way their genitals look, and wish to change their appearance. Labiaplasty may also increase sexual function as the reduction of the labia or the clitoral hood provides greater exposure to the clitoris. Sometimes it is performed as a restorative surgery, when a woman's labia are damaged during childbirth.
The surgery
Labiaplasty is performed under local or general anaesthesia. Scars are minimal and hardly visible. It usually takes about one or two hours.
The surgery is usually performed on the labia minora, the inner lips. It may be done by reducing the excess tissue by removing a section from the centre of the labia and bringing together the top and the bottom. Laser may also be used to trim them. While the first procedure leaves the normal labial edge, the latter does not.
Some women may opt for augmentation labiaplasty to enhance the labia majora. In this procedure fat is from other areas of the body and its injected into the labia, providing an enhanced and youthful appearance.
After surgery
A dressing is applied on the area after the surgery. Patients should rest for about 3-7 days and use ice packs in that area. They can usually return to work within a week. Patients should avoid strenuous activity and sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks after the surgery.
Complications and risks
Every surgery carries the possibilities of complications. The risks from labaplasty are similar to those from other operations: allergic reactions to anaesthesia, bleeding, infection, scarring, swelling, and bruising. Risks associated with labiaplasty include changes in sensation, changes in pigmentation, or asymmetry.
You can avoid most complications by choosing the right surgeon and following pre- and postoperative instructions.
